Why the Coal Region?

Schuylkill County, PA has a rich and unique history of storytelling. From the internationally acclaimed literature of John O’Hara, to the oral histories passed down amongst the families of coal miners.

A unique cultural and economic opportunity

  • There are over 80 festivals in the state of Pennsylvania, but none in Schuylkill County.
  • Festivals offering cash prizes attract big numbers. The average cost of film submissions is between $30-$50, with many festivals receiving over 1,000 submissions.
  • Short film blocks allow screening of work from five plus creators in the span of two hours. This means bigger audiences, and more people visiting the county and patronizing local businesses.
  • The John O’Hara Screenwriting Award will attract an international pool of screenplay submissions. This could represent hundreds of additional submission fees that do not need to fund a physical event.

Now is the time

Over the past decades, the community has worked hard to revitalize the region, creating a vibrant downtown in Pottsville, and an ever growing number of community programs. Now is the perfect time to celebrate and add to that work by throwing our own star-studded, multi-day event that activates beloved local venues.
